Artist Statement
My artwork is an array of multi-media work, from photography, printmaking, video art, painting, sculpting, and found objects installation/ assemblage. Each of my works contains a narrative of identity, freedom, culture, language, body, soul, and existance in an open concept expression. Most of my paintings embody history, story, and narratives that communicate oral language that is misrepresented or silenced.
For the past couple of years, I have worked on a series called "Figuras de Mujeres" which was MFA Exhibition involving paintings and sculptures using geometric and organic shapes in a cubist conversation. I wanted to create my own version of women from a strong perspective; I wanted to share this series of women in hopes that my viewers can connect and look at themselves and know that no matter where they are in life, they are strong. My series includes an array of paintings to sculptures in wood and metal. The materials I use range from acrylic paint on canvas, gold leaf, wood, and fabric, wood sculptures, found objects in jewelry, and welded art pieces. The materials I use allow me to flow from abstraction and geometric shapes are very versatile and comfortable to manipulate, which, allows me to further experiment and help portray the strong women I paint or create. The choice of colors I utilize helps give voice to each painting whether the colors are loud or bold, as well as achromatic colors. Each painting is to represent all women of color in my culture or any culture. The colors and shapes I use complement each other to help convey emotion.
As I continue to work on my art, I want all the components to come together to create a connection with my viewers. I want my audience to know that women are strong in any narrative they might be in in life, they are free to be who they are without judgment.
